Flame-retardant window screen It’s quietly gaining popularity. Although its price is about one-third higher than that of ordinary window screens, thanks to its “fire-retardant” properties, it’s becoming increasingly popular among many residents. But can this flame-retardant window screen really prevent fires?


  The supplier of flame-retardant window screens states that the material used in these screens is a “new, high-tech fiberglass fabric” that is both environmentally friendly and fire-resistant, and can also block harmful ultraviolet rays from damaging the human body. When exposed to a mild flame for over ten seconds continuously, the surface of the screen shows no signs of burning or tearing. The raw material used to produce these ‘flame-retardant window screens’ is black fiberglass yarn. This material exhibits a certain degree of flame retardancy. Its texture is slightly softer than that of metal mesh screens but more tear-resistant than ordinary nylon mesh screens. Fiberglass itself possesses inherent properties such as fire resistance, water resistance, and thermal insulation; its melting point is around 1200°C, making it generally difficult to ignite. Today, it is widely used in environments where welding, cutting, and other processes that easily generate sparks and potential fires are common. This fiberglass can effectively resist splashing sparks, slag, and welding spatter. However, this material is not “new, high-tech.” Currently, “flame-retardant window screens” available on the market not only contain fiberglass but also include adhesive components such as PVC and resins. Because these adhesives help stabilize the highly extensible fiberglass, when ignited, they produce large amounts of dense black smoke. From a material perspective, both fiberglass and PVC are inherently flame-retardant—meaning they don’t easily catch fire and do not promote combustion.


  However, it’s important to note that flame-retardant window screens cannot completely block out flames. We’d like to remind the general public that among standard fire-fighting equipment, only fire doors, fire dampers, and fire windows are designed to resist fire—there is no such thing as a “flame-retardant window screen.” The primary cause of injury and death in fires is dense smoke, which often leads to poisoning and suffocation from carbon dioxide. According to statistics, the number of deaths caused by smoke inhalation during fires is four to five times higher than the number of deaths from burns. When encountering heavy smoke, the correct approach is to cover your mouth and nose with a wet towel to reduce smoke inhalation, keep your body low, and escape quickly. Such “flame-retardant window screens” cannot effectively resist smoke, and their flame-retardant performance is generally limited.

  1. Flame-retardant window screen nylon mesh: Also known as nylon mesh, these screens are typically installed on windows and doors or mounted on external frames. Widely used in windows, doors, and corridors, their primary function is to prevent small insects, mosquitoes, and flies from entering indoor spaces. Window screens made from plain-weave nylon offer advantages such as lightweight construction, elegant appearance, resistance to acids and alkalis, corrosion resistance, and excellent ventilation. They are frequently employed in residential buildings. Thanks to their affordable price, light weight, and ease of cleaning, they are highly popular among consumers.

They also feature characteristics such as rodent resistance, mosquito prevention, fire resistance, high-temperature tolerance, and flame retardancy. Additionally, their air-flow rate is superior to that of standard nylon screen windows.
